Just after the turn of the century, George Scontsas opened a shoe repair shop that included a shoe shine parlor, barber shop, and hat blocking service in Downtown Nashua. As the store evolved, the elder Mr. Scontsas began to stock greeting cards, and by the mid ‘40’s, his store was the first Hallmark store in Nashua. Scontsas and his children, keeping up with the times, added a toy department, yarn, paperback books, and a large selection of gifts. In 1974, Peter Scontsas and his wife Joan, purchased deMontigny Jewelers in the adjacent building and opened the wall between the stores making them one.
Peter was innovative in his business practices, making every customer feel like family. Since his father’s death in 1995, Philip Scontsas and his wife Amalia developed a new department featuring decorative elements for the home and garden. According to Scontsas, “In some ways we’ve come full circle. It has been a tradition in our family to evolve our businesses in the direction that Downtown Nashua is heading – upscale, boutique, with personal service and individuality.”
Today Scontsas Fine Jewelry & Home Décor offer many gift items, such as fine estate pieces, contemporary jewelry, diamonds, giftware, silver, hollowware, pewter, antiques, architectural pieces, topiaries, and holiday ornaments. The store appeals to those looking for upscale, unusual, individual, one-of-a-kind, and quality items.
